Many years back, my sister, who lived some 15 miles from the big city, and her husband happened to be on the west coast at the time. Had two small sons, and having to do considerable amount of laundry, she was on her way to the basement, that seemed to have an usual number of stairs. Carrying her laundry basket with both of her hands, not seeing the stairs, as she should have, and wearing house slippers, she happen to miss a step and slid on her back all the way down. My mother happened to be staying with her at the time; after helping her get back up stairs, mother called me, to let me know what had happened, because they thought that, she may have fractured or broken something and that it would be a good idea to see a doctor. I said to mother, put my sister on the phone, and in agony that you could hear, she explained what had taken place, and that she needed to see a doctor to see if she had broken anything, because of the pain that she felt, she thought that something might have been broken . I left immediately to provide the transportation that she needed, and as she was getting into the car, you could see the pain that she was in. I headed for the doctor's office, arriving at the office, she climbed out of the car in pain and limping and carrying her pocketbook. We waited for about 45 minutes, before she able to see the doctor, when the nurse called her, she left her pocketbook with me to hold, and she had limped along to get to the designated room.
Well, after the visit you could see a difference in her walk, no more limping, and a smile on her face, you got to wonder, had the doctor had a magic cure ? In a normal manner she approached me and took her pocketbook, and said lets go. I said what had happened, she explained that it seemed that their were no broken bones and that she was just badly bruised, and from her new walk, you could not tell that she had any bad bruises.
What made the difference, a good word of encouragement from the doctor, made all the difference of how she felt ! Those words of " no broken bones ", did it for her, put a smile on her face and a skip in her step, and she did not need any medication to speak of.
A few years back, at work, there was an individual that had hurt his knee. And was limping some what, and looked like he was in pain, and would you believe it, the same thing happen to him, after his doctors visit. When he found out that there were no broken bones, he lost his limp. Amazing, that a few good words from the doctor can accomplish and make all the difference in the world.
We quite offen forget how powerful words are, and this old saying of " Stick and stones will brake my bones but words will never hurt me! " is really not true. And as there are words that heal, then there words that kill the spirit, and we have to weigh our words carefully before we speak them.
Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
