Obtain a small metal nut and dark thread ( string ), about a foot in length, tie it to the nut first, use several knots and trim any extra thread off the nut. Next, with the remainder string, tie the hanging nut, to the pivot straighten paper clip, (that now, has one right angle at the front), so that the nut is about an inch off the table. Tie the nut in front of the supporting paper clip, it will act like a plum line. When using the SBB you will have to steady the PLUM LINE, so it does not move, but is straight up and down, when at rest. With your plastic cups attached, and your " SP "( Sliding Poise ) is at the zero position, try adjusting the " SS " ( SMALL SLEEVES ) so that the Paper Clip Pointer is directly in back of the PLUM LINE string. Assuming you followed directions and are using a single " SS "( SMALL SLEEVES ) to make your adjustment. Keep adjusting the "SS" ( SMALL SLEEVES ) until it is balanced, that is, when you give the BEAM a slight tap with a pen or a pencil the PAPER CLIP POINTER should move just about as far to the opposite side as it does on the side that you tapped it. When it stops give it another tap so that you are sure that the PAPER CLIP POINTER is moving passed the zero point (PLUM LINE) about equal distance, and making sure to check that the "SP" ( Sliding Poise ) is located at exactly zero gram mark. If it is not balanced, you have to adjust the " SS "( Sliding Poise ) as described in the above procedure, using your thumbs on both sides of the "SS". Once your are sure that you have balanced the SBB, to be accurate, repeat the procedure of zeroing the balance three times. Make a mark in front and back of the "SS"( Sliding Poise ) so this way, you can check it visually to see if it is in the right location, but before using the "SBB" always recalibrate for zero grams. Now, place a " a brand new penny year 2001" (any new penny above the year 1990 should do ) which was very close to 2.5 grams, into your Left cup, and slide the "SP" ( Sliding Poise ) to the right with a pencil or a pen, while giving the beam a slight tap every so often as you slide the "SP" ( Sliding Poise ) to the right, once you get close to the point where it is balanced, you may have to go slightly to the left, so that you have it balanced. To be accurate, repeat the balancing of the 2.5 g location three times.
