How to build a Single Beam Balance (SBB) from half inch PVC pipe
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
AGAIN, ALWAYS USE SAFETY GOGGLES, AND ALWAYS WORK UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF AN ADULT!
Materials needed:
A fine point permanent magic marker ( I used a marker purchased from a art supply store, brand name is Staedtler, made in Germany that I used to use at work, price one dollar.) that can be erased with rubbing alcohol. Or ( Not recommended ) you may use, a straight pin or a safety pin to make your markings, and use a soft lead pencil to fill the mark in so that it will stand out.
A hack saw
Drill
Drill bits
Vice
Paper clips
One large, two and one half inch denting nail
Two - sturdy plastic cups, ( I used plastic cups, left over from Yogurt)
One - Ten foot long, one half inch PVC pipe (white) at $1.50
Four - PVC T's at 24 cents each
Two - PVC right angle's at 19 cents
I purchased my original 1/2 inch PVC Pipe, from a well known hardware store, the initials are ( H.D. ) I am sure that the local hard ware stores will charge a bit more. The wall thickness of this pipe was 1/8 th of an inch, as opposed to a new hardware store, ( initials, L ) on the block, for a slightly lower price and its wall thickness was 1/16 th of an inch. See picture below of Sliding Poise # 1 and # 2.
When you purchase your ten foot pipe, you may want to cut off a section, at roughly at four and one half feet or have it cut, this is an approximate cut, so don't be concerned about the exact size. This way, it will be easier to transport.
Pipe Cuts
One -- whole end of the of the " T ", it will be about half an inch in length and we will call it, the " Large Sleeve " LS, as you can see a " T " has three ends or three sleeves.
The remainder of the two other " Sleeves" try to cut them into about 1/4 inch slices, so you will end up with four "Small Sleeves". You will have to use a vice for all Sleeve cuts. ( See diagram # )
One-- 24 inches long, will serve as the main beam ( this cut has to be exact, buy using your "Large Sleeve" for making the circle around the pipe)
One -- Eight inch long piece, will serve as the main stand
One-- Two and one half inches long, will join the right angles.
Six-- Three inches long, which will serve as the parts of the base
(Save the remiander Pipe for future projects)
