DEMONSTRATION LAB:

CAUTION: ONLY, TO BE DONE OR DEMONSTRATED BY AN ADULT, BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF INJURY FROM THE FIRE OR FROM THE HOT WATER.

To demonstrate that you cannot have a fire, unless the kindling temperature is reached!

BOILING WATER

OBJECT:

How to boil water in a paper container!

MATERIALS:

SAFETY EQUIPMENT, SAFETY GOGGLES, FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND OR PLENTY OF WATER IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG!
One sheet of construction paper (I used notebook paper), trimmed to 7 in by 7 in.; Four paper clips, water and a gas range; You may find that you get to much dripping of water through the thin paper, to avoid this use heavier paper, like construction paper.

PROCEDURE AND OBSERVATION:

1. Take your trimmed paper sheet, and measure and mark about a two-inch margin all around the perimeter of the paper.

2. Make your square cup, using the two-inch perimeter as your sides, to complete the cup use your paper clips, at ends of the corners.

3. Place completed cup on to stove, fill half full with water, if your notebook paper is very thin, you might get some dripping through the paper.

4. Turn your gas jet on, and you should notice that the paper cup does not burn.

5. If you are serious about boiling water, you must use a piece of aluminum paper as a cover for the paper cup. If you are an adult, you know from experience that it will take longer for water to boil in an uncovered pot, then in a covered pot. You may want to demonstrate this for yourself, with two identical pots, but one with a cover and the other with out the cover or lid.

6. CAUTION: IMPORTANT! After turning the flame off! Wait ten minutes to allow the water to cool sufficiently, so that you can remove it to the sink!

QUESTIONS:

1. What are the three requirements or conditions that must be met to have a successful fire?

2. What maks it possible to boil water in a paper container?

3. If you happen to have a grease fire, in the kitchen, why is not a good idea to use water to extinguish the fire?

4. What is spontaneous Combustion?

5. How can dust explosions be minimized or reduced.

6. Give an example of rapid oxidation.

7. Give an example of slow oxidation.

8. What cannot be observed in a slow oxidation?

When ether became popular as an anesthetic, because it work so well, there was one problem associated with its use. There were times when operating room would explode. Studying the problem they found out that all you needed was one spark to get the ether to explode in an operating room. To remedy this problem, all operating beds would be grounded, so that static could not build up and non-static clothing would be used.
