There, for a short time period in the mid seventies, there was great concern to the Entomologist, that one species of firefly would become extinct! Their concern came about from the fact that a larger species of firefly, had broken the smaller species fireflies light code, and would be eaten upon their landing to mate. The fireflies are carnivorous feeding on worms and snails and apparently other smaller fireflies, and since these females were much larger than the smaller males, the male did not stand a chance. For one thing, most female species of firefly are wingless as opposed to the male species. Could you imagine, a firefly coming in for a landing to start a new family, only to be greeted by a hungry more powerful strange female and be eaten.
These soft body beetles have amazed and dazzled youngsters in being able to glow in the dark. This has also amazed scientist, for the fact that they are able to produce light without any heat, known as luminescence. In some species the eggs are luminescence as well as the larva. There are about 50 or so species in the United States, with many more species that are found in the tropics. So, you could see the concern that the scientist had in loosing any species of insect especially such a beautiful as this one. This on and off sequence is not random, but is precisely timed for their particular species of firefly, and it is different from other species. The scientist's concern was short lived, it seems that the code of light sequence of on and off, has been breached before.
