Wasted Prospects

I sought for treasures in the mountain,
Panned for nuggets in rushing streams;
Hunted precious stones and metals
In the ancient mountains seams.

I searched the seas for sunken vessels
Lost with cargoes of jewels and gold
And scoured the reefs and rocks to find
What wealth the deep might unfold.

A wise man long ago said to me,
"Seek riches more than you can spend."
And I, unwise, sought silver and gold,
When the only true wealth is a friend.
