Pithy Sayings
of Don Miller, Jr.
Personal Quotes (it's a rather long list of sayings you might hear me say, with some comments):
1. "I'd rather be told something I already know than not told something I don't know."
2. "Life is like a terminal disease, you die from both in the end." Not meant to be fatalistic but practical. Enjoy life to its fullest, but don't take any unecessary chances.
3. "Say what you mean and mean what you say."
4. "Life could be better, but it could be worse too."
5. "Ask a question and be a fool for 5 minutes, or don't ask a question and be a fool FOREVER." I read that quotation in my 7th grade science class in 1970. Egads, has it been that long ago?
6. "Hakuna Matata" - from Disney's "The Lion King"
7. "Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it." - This is my feelings about tools.
8. "I'm not perfect. I've never claimed to be and never will claim to be. There was/is only one person who was/is perfect, and I'm not Him".
9. "I'll admit when I'm wrong." - This goes along w/ number 8. Why deny you're wrong when the facts support that fact. Admit your error and learn from it.
10. "I'm not an expert." or "I don't know." - This also goes with number 8. You can always learn more in any given field than what you already know. Mathematicians always say, "Think of the largest number you can, and it won't be the largest because you can always add 1 (one) to it". I feel the same way about knowledge. Even if you think you know everything about a subject, there is probably someone else with just one more fact that you don't have (with the possible exception of Stephen Hawking). Even Albert Einstein was constantly refining the Theory of Relativity, and he CREATED it.
11. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." - The GOLDEN RULE. I may not say it that often, but I try to live by it all the time.
12. " ... I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write." - Voltaire
"I may dissapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." - Beatrice Hall, writing *about* Voltaire.
This is my take on censorship.
