| FORT DELAWARE |
Many of the Confederates captured at Gettysburg were imprisoned at Fort Delaware. This fort was built on Pea Patch Island in the center of the Delaware River approximately 40 miles south of Philadelphia. Today the island complex is called Fort Delaware State Park. The following few photos are of the fort as it stands today.

Approximately 2,500 prisoners died at Fort Delaware. Of these over 2,400 are buried in a National Cemetery at Finn's Point New Jersey just across the river from the fort. Although there is a large monument with all the names of the Confederates interred in the cemetery, sadly, the individual graves are not marked. The following photos show the sign at the entrance to the cemetery and the Confederate monument.
