| Just west of the Railroad Cut on the north side of the Chambersburg Pike are monuments for the Union's John Buford and John Reynolds. On the morning of July 1 Buford's Cavalry Brigades held off the Confederate forces long enough for Union troops led by Reynold's to arrive and take control of the high ground. Reynolds was offered command of the Army of the Potomac in June 1863 but refused because he felt he wouldn't be given a free hand in directing the Army. Shortly after arriving at Gettysburg he was killed while positioning the Iron Brigade. Major General John Reynolds was the highest ranking officer on either side killed at Gettysburg. Buford survived the battle but died due to illness on Dec. 16, 1863. |

| The Last Survivor This memorial to the Grand Army of the Republic is located near the end of the battlefield auto tour. It depicts the likeness of Albert Woolson, the last Union Army Veteran. He died on Aug. 2, 1956 at the age of 109. Mr. Woolson answered President Lincoln's call to arms and marched off to war as a drummer boy when he was 17. Upon hearing of his death President Eisenhower said, "the death of Mr. Woolson brings sorrow to the hearts of Americans. The American people have lost the last personal link with the Union Army". Albert Woolson is buried in Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth, Minnesota. |
