The 40th NY Infantry monument is located in the Valley of Death directly in front of Little Round Top. (out of view to the left) The small rock just to the right of the monument has a faded carving of the 40th's name. It was probably carved by a member of the Regiment during one of their reunions. The monument for the 10th Massachusetts Infantry is located near the southern end of Cemetery Ridge. The 11th Mississippi Infantry monument sits near the center of Seminary Ridge. Their Regiment had 393 combatants at the outset of the battle. Only 53 left Gettysburg as non-casualties.

Minnesota Sacrifice

Late on the afternoon of July 2, after the collapse of the Union line at the Peach Orchard, Confederate Infantry threatened to pour through a gap in the Union line here. General Hancock ordered a charge. With leveled bayonets the men of the 1st Minnesota Infantry crashed into Brigadier General Cadmus M. Wilcox's Alabamians who out numbered them 4 to 1. The charge broke the Confederate ranks and stalled the Southerners long enough for re-inforcements to arrive. The Union line was saved but at a terrific cost. Of the 262 Minnesotians in the charge only 47 escaped death or injury. The following three photos show the monument for the 1st Minnesota Infantry, the area of their charge and the inevitable result.
