Since we've had our Web-site, a number of visitors have asked why the Devil's Den and Triangular Field areas aren't on the battlefield auto-tour. Quite simply, it's because of one of many bonehead ideas that sprang forth from the NPS. During the mid 1980's, they planned on removing the three roads leading to and from that area. Knowing Devil's Den was very popular with visitors, two new roads would be built to accommodate traffic, complete with a large turnaround and parking lot. We're borrowing a line from the film Apollo 13, "Tell me this isn't a government operation." Locals and historians rose up, protesting the new roads would permanently destroy some of this hallowed ground. As a compromise, the NPS agreed to drop the construction plans but removed the Devil's Den area from the auto-tour. Go figure.
