Virginia
Although we have the Virginia monument elsewhere on our site we had a few requests for some close-up shots. On top of the monument is Robert E. Lee astride Traveller. The group of soldiers on the bottom represent various types who left civil occupations to join the Confederate Army.
Hancock Wounding Site Armistead Wounding Site
Most visitors probably ride right past this small monument not even knowing what it is. This marks the spot where General Hancock was wounded during Pickett's Charge. The location is approximately 500 yards south of the Angle. Upon hitting the ground Hancock gave orders not to be removed from the field until the battle was decided. This small monument marks the spot where General Armistead was wounded near the climax of Pickett's Charge. Of the thousands of Confederates who participated in the assault he was one of only a handful that actually managed to make it across the wall. Although doctors didn't think his wounds were serious he died 2 days later.
Irish Brigade
The Irish Brigade monument for the 63rd, 69th and 88th New York Infantry is located midway between the Wheatfield and the Rose farm. The Brigade suffered heavy casualties during the battle of Gettysburg.
Delaware
An inscription on the back of the monument reads, "This memorial is dedicated to all Delawareans who fought at Gettysburg both Union and Confederate."
Maryland
This monument was sculpted by Lawrence Ludtke in 1994 and is titled, 'A Final Tribute'. Just as those who came from Delaware, Marylanders fought on both sides.
